Some mountains are just that.... mountains. But some have a personality and are Mountains. Nanda Devi is a Sacred Mountain.
Nanda means Parvati, Shiv'a female counterpart. Literally, it means fair colored or white.
Nanda Devi at 7,816 m (25,643 ft), it is the second hoghest peak in India. The highest, Kanchenjenga too is a sacred mountain. It has a large and steep prominence of 10,300 feet over the surrounding mountain ranges. In fact it is one of the steepest peaks in the world. It is surrounded by relatively deep valleys. For example, it rises over 6,500 metres (21,300 ft) above the valley of the Gauriganga in only 50 km (30 miles)
Nanda Devi is now part of the national park iof the same name, which also has the world famous Valley of Flowers. From 1964 to 1974 it was closed for climbing. Reopened in 1974, it was again closed in 1983, and remains out of bounds for climbing expeditions. Even trekking expeditions are not easily permitted.
