Krishna & The Cosmic Tree Of Eternal Life

Krishna & The Cosmic Tree Of Eternal Life

TREE

M L Varadpande

The Bhagavata Purana narrates how one day, Krishna, addressing his young cowherd friends in the Vrinda forest on the banks of river Yamuna, said: "Look at these bountiful trees. They live for the benefit of others. There is not a single part of the tree which is not useful. With their beautiful foliage, fragrant flowers, cool shade, roots, bark, wood, sprouts, fruits they serve". Nobody returns without benefiting, who approaches the tree.

Krishna implored his fellow cowherds to follow the example of the tree in life. The tree has a special significance in the life and teachings of Krishna. During his early days he virtually lived in the forest surrounded by trees. Poet Jayadeva described him as one living in the forest full of trees swayed by the gentle fragrant breeze cooled by the Yamuna waters. Krishna looked bewitching with a colourful garland of fragrant flowers.

Krishna compares human life with a tree. In the Bhagavad Gita, echoing the concept of Katho-panishads, he says human life is like the eternal Ashvattha tree having roots growing above and branches beneath. Puranas say that during the great deluge, pralaya, when everything drowned in turbulent waters, Krishna, assuming the form of a divine child, sleeps on the leaf of the Ashvattha tree, the tree of life.

Krishna is identified with his flute, simplest of musical instruments made of bamboo, enchanting the entire world. On a full moon night, enchanted by the dense Vrinda forest on the banks of the river, Krishna played his flute. The gopis rushed to dance with him on the white sands, intoxicated with divine music.

When Krishna came to know that the poisonous vapours emitted by Kalia, the cobra, were destroying trees, foliage, and grass on the banks of the river Yamuna, he was worried. In order to save the environment, Krishna fought the destructive demon, and overcame him by dancing on the snake's hood, holding Kalia's tail in his hand. Krishna overpowered Kalia who then had to leave.

In this context the tree of Kadamba is mentioned. Kadamba trees are still found in large numbers in the Braj region. Groves of Kadamba trees, known as Kasaba Khandi, existed till recently in the region. This tree was the favourite of Krishna and a number of lilas are associated with Kadamba trees. To drive away Kalia he jumped into the Yamuna river after climbing on to a Kadamba tree. Mischievous Krishna stole the clothes of young gopis bathing in the river Yamuna and hid in the Kadamba tree.

While planning the city of Dwarka Krishna earmarked extensive spaces for growing trees and plants of different varieties. He had a fascination for rare plants. Puranas say that Krishna fought a pitched battle with Indra, the king of gods, to bring the sapling of the Parijata tree which grew only in heaven, particularly Nandanvana, to plant it on earth.

Krishna's fondness for trees, plants, bowers with thick foliage was translated into the concept of Nikunja Lila by Premopasaka Sampradayas of Braj. According to it, the devotees should meditate upon the divine couple, Radha and Krishna's Nikunja Lila and attain spiritual bliss.

Dogumentaries

Dogumentaries

Dogumentaries

I am not a doggy type. In fact I do not like any animals in my house. A good, nice doggy is one which is at least 30 M away. But then dogs too are part of the world. You can ignore them, but cannot wish them away. They are not even the 42 young urchins, so you cannot call wild bears on them, can you?? Then everybody, not being prophets,  cannot even call the bears.

A few days ago two headlines on ninemsn.com caught my eye. One was a child-abuse story off Fox news (foxnews.com) about how five-year-olds were being slipped ‘silly pills’ and made to perform sexually provocative dances at a Texan swingers club. [The said club is in Texas].

The other story, which was originally reported in Daily Express (express.co.uk), was of a dog in Argentina, who saved a new born baby that had been abandoned and dumped in a dustbin. The dog, China, picked up the baby and kept it warm through the night, along with her own pups. Gives the phrase ‘animal instinct’ a whole new spin. Dogs can beat humans in many departments. They definitely never launched crusades or inquisitions.

Tolerance is a two way street

Tolerance is a two way street

All the xians, from pope to the lay ones are fond of sermonizing the non xians about virtues of tolerance. This "tolerance" actually means tolerance of xians, irrespective of their crimes, sins and depredations. They keep on pointing fingers at the intolerance of non xians. But they forget that tolerance is not a one way street, where they are free to travel. They must tolerate the non xians too traveling the same street in whichever direction they choose.

First step on the street of tolerance is to recognise that others too have a right on the street.

While insulting the Pharisees and Sadducees, John the Baptist calls an entire generation a "generation of vipers." Matt.  3:7. This definitely is not a lesson in tolerance. This passage is responsible for the xians to hate non xians.

Second step is in recognising the freedom of non xians in respect of faith. Let us see how they do it.

Cities that neither "receive" the disciples nor "hear" their words will be destroyed by God. It will be worse for them than for Sodom and Gomorrah. And you know what God supposedly did to those poor folks (see Gen.19:24). Matt. 10:14-15

Any city that doesn't "receive" the followers of Jesus will be destroyed in a manner even more savage than that of Sodom and Gomorrah. Mark 6:11. Jesus makes it clear that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed "for not receiving the followers of biblegod". Their only sin was that they were not ready to host Lot, nothing else.

A clear usurpation of the right intrude on others and force them to listen to their word. Suppose Hindus don't want to receive those disciples, nor do they want to listen??  Clear. Carry out the wish of their god and destroy them and their cities. This single passage has resulted in the large scale genocides in America, Africa and Australia, and Asia too. Asians were culturally strong and were able to largely resist it, but others were destroyed. But their dirty tricks department is strong. Swami Laxmanand had been demonised for years, for resisting proselytizing missionaries and finally killed on 23 Aug, 2008.

A third step in tolerance is the uniting of the families. If family members are tolerant of each other, it is a harmonious family. If they are intolerant of each other, it is a text book method of ushering in a disharmonious society. Does xianity such a family harmony? NO.

Jesus says that he has come to destroy families by making family members hate each other. He has "come not to send peace, but a sword." Matt. 10:34-36

If the missionaries succeed in converting just member of a family, he pulls out a figurative sword against his kins. He repudiates every thing that he had: Food, clothes, way of greeting and general comport, just because he MUST appear different. He will pressurize and persecute them into conversion. Not long ago, an Indian xian woman killed her husband for refusing to convert. Her death sentence has been commuted into imprisonment for life.

Fourth step is in forgiving. Do they forgive? NO.

"His blood be on us, and on our children." This verse blames the Jews for the death of Jesus and has been used to justify their persecution for twenty centuries culminating in the holocaust. Matt. 27:25

Biblegod in OT promises that he shall punish the seven generations for sins of fathers. For how many generations the Jews were punished??

Jesus merrily trample on the freedom of conscience.

Jesus says, "He that is not with me is against me." Luk. 11:23. What tolerance he is teaching.

Forcing others to believe in your god is not tolerance at all.

Now that Jesus has come, non-believers have no excuse for not believing in him. 15:22

Excuse?? As if not believing him is a crime, so that I will search for excuses!!

Xians, heal thyself. Be tolerant first. Don't go on testing the tolerance of others, it is finite even if long. And break point is fast approaching.

Sacred Mountain - OM Parvat

Sacred Mountain - OM Parvat

Om is most sacred word and sound in Hindu and Buddhist faiths. OM is the Word.
As per Panchavimsh Brahmana::

In the beginning was Prajapati, His Word was the second. This word is OM.
Mount OM is in shape of OM in devnagri script, the one used as vehicle for Sanskrit language since long. (ॐ)
The OM can be seen from a distance, and from air very clearly and unmistakenly. Hindus believe that it was etched into the Himayas by Lord Shiva welding His trident.

Elevation 6,191 metres (20,312 ft)
Location Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, India
Range Eastern Kumaon Himalaya
Coordinates 30°20′00″N, 80°25′00″E

First ascent was in October 8, 2004 by Tim Woodward  and others. But they did not climb the final few metres  out of respect for the sacred nature of the summit.

Climbing permit is subject to the condition that the peak would not be stepped upon.

Shani, the judge

Shani, the judge

As per Hindu lore Shani is a son of Surya, the Sun God. He is immortalised as planet Shani, the Saturn.  How close to modern science. He was a unruly urchin and was not amenable to discipline. So his father turned him over to Lord Shiva, with a request to educate him in Dharma. Shani, in his arrogance, challenged even Shivs. Of course he was worsted, and rendered lame as well. At that Shani implored the protection of Shiva. Shiva thought for a moment and ordained: I appoint you judge on all the living and conscious beings. Be just and reward or punish them as per their deeds.

Shani accepted the orders, and was able to see the good and evil deeds of all, and dispensed justice. Once, Lord Shivs and Goddess Parvati held the birthday celebration of their young son Ganesha. Of course all the gods and and high sages were invited. Shani too was invited. But he stood with his back turned to Shiva and Parvati and Ganesha. Ma Parvati wondered, "Why is Shani standing with his back on us?? Why does he refrain from blessing Ganesha?". She then requested Lord Shivs about it. The Lord who could summon anyone to His presence, went in all humility to Shani and asked why he was behaving like that??

Shani replied: Sire, I am afraid of casting a critical look of Ganesha.

Lord asked: Surely, Ganesha being my son, is not subject to your justice!!

Shani replied: You did not exempt anyone, even Ganesha is not exempt.

Lord: What about me?? I appointed you the Judge. Surely I do not fall under your jurisdiction.

Shani: Sire, even you are not exempt.

That is how a judge should conduct himself.

The Lord said, " OK, we will discuss it tomorrow morning. Please come here". But come next day, Shiva was wracked by doubts. Shani will come without fail. He might cast a critical look upon me. I done nothing wrong, but then Shani is Shani". So in the Morning the Lord went off from Mt. Kailash to forested regions. What can I do? Shall I cloak myself in maya and be invisible to all. No, no, what will my devotees do?? OK for a day I will cloak myself and become an elephant.

Shani kept waiting till evening till the Lord returned. Shani asked : Sire you summoned me, but went off yourself. May I ask why?

Shiva said: O Shani, I wanted to escape your critical eyes.

Shani: Lord, but you did not succeed. My justice turned you into an elephant!!

Lord: How do you know, how did you penetrate the maya??

"Sire, you gave me such powers"

"What did I do?"

" Sire in the earlier times you disrupted a ritual being conducted by your Father-in-law Daksha. That was your personal vendetta, whatever the provocation. For that you, sire, had to become an animal for a day."

A judge is no judge if he does not treat all equally.

PS: Shani has a day named after him Shanivar, Saturday. On Saturday many people give away mustard and black grains.

Mount Kailash -the sacred mountain

Mount Kailash -the sacred mountain

Or Kailash Parvat as it is called by Indians, is a compelling, dome-shaped peak, rising above a fantastically beautiful 13,000 ft plateau of rainbow-coloured rocks. It is holiest of all holy peaks revered by millions of Hindus, Jain and Buddhists as the abode of Lord Shiva. The peak towers to nearly 22,000 ft. Steepness of slopes does not allow much snow to accumulate.

Kailash in Sanskrit language mean CRYSTAL, and it is surprisingly much harder and denser than the other mountains of the Himalayas. In stead of the typical jagged and sharp peaks, it is has a peculiar dome shape.

Hindus consider it as abode of Lord Shiva. Jains believe that the First teacher and founder of their Dharma attained His Nirvana here, thousands of years ago.

Every Hindu and Jain aspires to a pilgrimage to this mountain, but the trek is very difficult, testing and arduous, except for a short period 1959-84.

Geographical details:
Elevation 6,638 m (21,778 ft)
Location China (Tibet)
Range Trans-Himalayas
Prominence 1,319 m
Coordinates 31°04′00″N, 81°18′45″E

Every year thousands of pilgrims make the trek, which has a tradition of thousands of years. A dip in the nearby icy cold waters of Mansrovar lake surface elevation 4556 m or 15,000 ft], an offering of worship to Lord Shiva are parts of this pilgrimage. After that follows the 52 km circumanbulation of the Mouton. Ideally it should be completed one day, but few can do it because of  uneven terrain, altitude sickness [route rising upto 17,000 ft]  and harsh conditions faced in the process. Normal time is about 3 days. Even if the Chinese build a road, few pilgrim will do it by vehicles, preferring to walk. The holy Parvat is part of a national park, so the road is not likely to be built.

The Kailash has never been climbed, and is unlikely to be climbed. It is considered so holy that the Chinese government does not permit climbing.

In feasibility of God

In feasibility of God

This essay is not dealing with any specific model of God. It treats the general case of God. Although infeasibilty of a creator who creates out of nothing is doubtful, an architect God can manage to pass. So this is largely applicable to the creator out of nothing variety of God.

If some one thinks that it is anti-his god, then so be it.

It shows that the attributes attached to God cannot be satisfied simultaneously. So either God has to brought down a few pegs or He cannot exist feasibly.

Sankhya

1 God cannot be the first cause

God is said to be eternal and immutable. What is unchanging cannot be the cause of any effect. Thus ultimate cause of universe is the eternal yet ever changing Prakriti aka matter.

2. It may be said that matter is non intelligent and must be controlled and directed by an intelligent agent. But God, as posited by theists, does not act and control.

A thinker, Chaitra argued:

Cause of an effect has to be momentary, otherwise there would be continued effect. therefore a cause must cease after it produces an effect. Effect can persist. So if God is cause, He became extinct immediately after creation. But theists say God is eternal and not momentary.

3. Need to act. Suppose God IS and acts at a given moment, in a far yet in finite past, why should He act ??

Before acting, He sure was inactive. What or who activated him ??? This goes into infinite regress, and is thus absurd.

God did not act to fulfill any of His ends, since He is perfect, and is in want of nothing.

Nor can it be love and good of His creatures, which are yet to be created. No prudent entity will work for any creature without a gain to itself. Anyway, the world is full of misery and evil, thus defeating the supposed of His creatures. this disproves His omnipotence, as He can't remove evil to and in His creatures.

This also disproves His omniscience, as He could not foresee the future misery of His creatures.

If in spite of this we consider Him as the Ultimate Creator, then He is cruel in allowing His creatures to be in misery.

4. Inconsistent with Self. God is inconsistent with individual reality ie of soul. If soul is part of God, then every individual should have a part of His divinity. It is not so.

If soul is created by God, then it can be destroyed too. What is rationality of hell fires for an entity which can be annihilated !!! Why punish souls at all ???

Otherwise soul HAS to be eternal and immortal !!! But atheists deny eternity and immortality of any object except God.

last alternative is that there is no soul. That reduces the living creatures as images in clay moved by some forces other than Godly. And if there is no soul, then death is the finality.

What will be punished or rewarded after death ???

Conclusion is that God cannot exist, and Prakriti aka primal matter is the first cause.

Jain
1. God is imperceptible.

Even theists cannot claim to have seen God. But they try to prove Him by inference. Theists claim that the world is created by God. But they are yet to prove that world is a CREATED product. they could not observed the creation act itself, as
they were yet to be created.

2. A single God is unproved

Theists claim that God is ONE.They argue that multiple Gods may lead to conflicts. this is not tenable as we daily see teams of humans working on a project, even ants working in a co-ordinated fashion. Therefore if one God is possible then many, in fact infinite number of Gods are possible. This clearly is absurd because infinite number is impossible to achieve.

3. God cannot be perfect

A perfect object can be perfect in comparison with an imperfect object. If God is perfect then what is the His imperfect counterpart ?? Oh no, not Satan, Satan can be evil and yet perfect !!!

Perfection is achieved by removal of imperfections. It is meaningless to call an object perfect unless it was imperfect.

Who removed the imperfections of God ??? Infinite regress waits for you.
                  *****
My supplements.

1. Doubtful eternity
God is posited as His own cause. Good God. Can a theist point to any such event taking place ??? God being self created should go on creating Himself ad infinitum.
2. Either God is non-entity like a sky-lotus and there is no possibility of Creation by that Non Entity [God].

3. Why should He create ??

If He is guided by some one else He is not free.

If He is guided in creation/destruction of world due good/bad actions of His creatures, then He is not free.

If He created as a sport and amusement then He is not free, as He depends on His creatures for His entertainment.

If He had no power of creation in the very beginning ie in infinitely remote past, then He can not acquire IT LATER. but since God is said to be immutable, He cannot acquire such powers, and some other entity conferred it upon Him. Infinite regress.

If creation is due to His existence and nature, then there should be simultaneous production. In such a case God may be even an incidental effect, not causally related to creation. Just like the sound of driving a nail is NOT related to the
driving of the nail.

If it is said that creation emanated out of Him unintentionally, then He is not in control of Himself. It additionally makes Him not "intelligent, omnipotent, omniscient" and a careless entity.

In short, it is not possible to satsify all the qualities attribute to creator God simultaneuly. Affimation of one contradicts the other qualities.
